One week of San Francisco Bay, in motion.

Each bright point is an AIS-equipped vessel. Let the replay run and the faint traces accumulate into the Bay’s working traffic lanes.

Preparing 115,417 AIS positions…
Day 1 of 7

About the data

2025-12-08 00:00 UTC → 2025-12-14 23:59 UTC

Positions come from NOAA MarineCadastre / USCG NAIS daily national AIS point files. The seven-day snapshot covers the Golden Gate, San Francisco Bay, the edge of San Pablo Bay, and ocean approaches. Data are public domain (CC0).

What this view leaves out

  • NAIS uses terrestrial receivers; brief offshore gaps and receiver shadows remain.
  • NOAA downsampled positions to roughly one report per minute per vessel.
  • Small craft without AIS are invisible. MMSIs and vessel types are self-reported.
  • A 50 m movement filter makes lanes clear but anchored vessels sparse.
  • The weekend is included, increasing pleasure and sailing traffic versus a pure workweek.
